Botox VS Dysport
Botox VS Dysport
Learn the specifics on Botox and Dysport's cost, onset time, desired look, the demographic that is typically receiving these injectables, and more!
Botox arrived on the market in 2002 as the first of its kind. This FDA approved injectable medicine was developed to block nerve signals to muscles and eliminate wrinkles. Botox has since become a household name thanks in part to shows like “The Real Housewives'' and Allergans (Botox manufacturer) focus on marketing.
Dysport, a rival of Botox was FDA approved in 2009. As “wrinkle relaxers”, Botox and Dysport work to achieve the same result, both with very high safety profiles. Treatments are administered with a small insulin syringe and typically take 10-15 minutes with minimal discomfort. Clients will experience a softened, more rejuvenated appearance with both products.
At Radiance we often get the question, “Which one is right for me?”. Many certified injectors will tell you comparing Botox to Dysport is like comparing apples to apples because they are very similar and both very effective. We have detailed the slight differences between the two to help you determine which product may be right for your needs.
Cost/units
Botox is a bit more expensive than Dysport. An area that would cost $220 with Dysport would cost on average $30-$50 more with Botox. Also, the units are calculated differently. For example, 1 unit of Botox equals about three units of Dysport. At Radiance, we charge Botox per unit and Dysport per area due to the calculating differences. Prices vary from practice to practice.
Onset time
Botox results begin at 5 to 10 days with full effect at 2 weeks. Results last between 3 and 4 months on average. If you are hoping to get more immediate results, Dysport results can be noticeable after only 3-4 days with full effect at 2 weeks. On average, Dysport results last 3-5 months. We encourage our clients to return for a follow-up at 2 weeks after Botox/Dysport injections for any necessary tweaking/adjustments. This allows for a better outcome and increased satisfaction with results!
The desired look
Botox stays close to its injected area. This gives clients a more intense result or more of a “frozen” look. Dysport reacts differently when injected and tends to spread more. This can give the client a more “natural” look with some movement if desired. This tends to be a more personal decision or consideration for clients. The options are discussed during the consultation period.
Rewards programs
Botox clients appreciate the Brilliant Distinction program, a loyalty program from Allergan (Botox manufacturer) that helps clients save on each treatment. This program recently merged with Alle, check out the Alle link if you are a current Brilliant Distinctions member to roll over your rewards! Clients can also save on Dysport treatments with the Aspire from Galderma (Dysport manufacturer).
The demographic
Most people who use wrinkle-relaxing injectables are between the ages of 35 and 65(3). Although treatments are still more popular with women, the number of men in that same age range has increased by more than 300% between 2000 and 2015, according to an American Society of Plastic Surgeons study(3).
With these treatments becoming less stigmatized, younger people are trying injectables as a form of preventative care by stopping these wrinkles from forming in the first place. The number of clients under the age of 30 who are choosing non-surgical “prejuvenation” methods continues to increase each year.
