Microdermabrasion vs. Dermaplaning

Want smoother, brighter and healthier looking skin?

Two of our staff favorites, and our clients most frequently requested services, microdermabrasion and dermaplaning offer smoother, brighter and healthier looking skin. Here is why!

Dermaplaning is a painless way to exfoliate the outer, most layer of the epidermis (stratum corneum) and remove vellus hair (peach fuzz).

Dermaplaning Benefits:

  • Removes dead skin cells allowing for improved product penetration
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines
  • Reduces milia and minor breakouts associated with congested pores
  • Evens skin tone
  • Immediate results reveal glowing healthy skin allowing for instant gratification

At Radiance, Chloe (our amazing esthetician) loves dermaplaning because it is such a “dramatic transformation”. “Between removing dead skin AND hair it gives such a clean and bright look instantly”. This quick transformation has many benefits and Chloe recommends dermaplaning every 4 weeks to retain the brightening effect.

How it works:

The tool used is a sterile, medical blade that looks like a razor. It is aimed at a 45 degree angle and dragged slowly across the skin. It is pain free and takes an average of 20-30 minutes.

What to Expect:

There is no healing time (downtime) to recover. It is normal to experience redness, mild irritation and it often takes a few days to appreciate the full result. Results are not permanent. Procedures may remove up to 3 weeks of dead skin cells. Vellus hair will regrow over 4-6 weeks. After this, results will begin to fade.

Considerations:

If you have an active acne flare-up, you may need to reschedule your appointment. Your certified esthetician will help to evaluate. Dermaplaning is the most suitable manual exfoliation for sensitive skin as there is no aggression used. Dermaplaning is recommended in combination with light therapies, enzyme peels and chemical peels for a more dramatic result.

Although at home tools are available to perform this procedure on yourself, there are risks involved. The risk of infection is greater, complications including reactions, and experiencing pain. It is best to seek a certified, skincare specialist to perform and for the most beneficial results.

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation treatment that removes the outer, most layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum.

Microdermabrasion Benefits:

  • Treats extremely dry skin, fine lines, texture and superficial scarring
  • Aids in reduction of breakouts
  • Triggers increased levels of collagen and elastin revealing plump, pillowy skin
  • Removes dead skin cells enhancing results of other treatments and increasing product absorption

At Radiance, Kelly (owner, esthetic RN) choses microdermabrasion to be her “favorite go-to for lightening, brightening and glowing look”. Microdermabrasion does not require any recovery time and Kelly recommends this every 2-4 weeks for the instant gratification of glowing skin.

How it works:

Microdermabrasion has a pen-like applicator with a diamond tip that creates suction, abrasion and pressure to the skin. The level of exfoliation is determined by the adjusted vacuum pressure and the level of grit to the diamond tip chosen by the esthetician. One to four passes are made over skin. This takes an average of 20-30 minutes.

What to expect:

The treatment is not painful but the client may experience a feeling of scratching. Mild redness is common post procedure. Occasionally, skin lifting from the vacuum can cause mild petechiae, which are tiny broken vessels. This will heal in less than 48 hours.  With a series of microdermabrasion's at 2-4 week intervals, results can last up to 6 months due to the increased collagen and elastin production.

Considerations:

Microdermabrasion is not recommended for skin conditions including Eczema, Rosacea, Lupus or open wounds. For those with multiple, broken capillaries, this mechanical exfoliation can worsen these tiny, threadlike veins. Microdermabrasion, alone will not treat deep acne scars or deep lines and it does not require downtime or any recovery time. It is highly recommended in combination with or prior to advanced skin therapies.

As always, a thorough evaluation of skin is performed prior to having either of these procedures by our certified staff!
